How to Select a Cat Grooming Expert

Cat Grooming Expert selection process

Families always want the best for their feline pals, and it’s important to always look into their best interests. If you’re one of the millions of cat owners, it’s important to look into getting your pet groomed by an expert. A good cat grooming professional will be able to not only help with the coat, nails, and overall well being, but also look into the health of your cat as well. A healthy cat will also most likely be a well groomed cat.

Consider following the hints below, when it’s time to select a cat grooming expert for your beloved feline friend.

  1. Ask Around – Make sure that you ask around and see if any of your friends and family is moving forward with grooming. Most often, professionals get a lot of their business through word of mouth, so it’s a good thing to consider overall. Neglecting to ask around can mean the difference between getting a good overall professional service or something less than wholesome for your pet.
  2. Reputation – We are living in a digital world, one that has a lot of information at the push of a button. People can even find a lot of different things on their phone, without getting on the full-fledged Internet. Reading the reputation of a company online is easier than ever. You will find that there are many different services in your area that offer the right services for you, at a price that you can afford.
  3. Quote – Get a quote before you invest in any type of service. This is a tried and true option that many people seem to forget about. Always make sure that you get a full quote, and if possible get it in writing. If you don’t get the information in writing, you might end up missing out on the greatness that is involved with getting a cat grooming expert to attend to your feline friend.
  4. Package Deals – Lastly, consider looking for package deals that will give you a discount. These can be a one-time discount or a discount on several services sprawled out throughout any given time frame. Getting ahead of the curve is important, and that’s why a package deal should be move forward with medical assistance as well.

Your pet deserves the best, and if you don’t have enough patience or time to do the whole grooming thing yourself, then look for a cat grooming expert for your overall needs. Your cat might not take to it at the very first moment, but they’ll learn to love the greatness of being pampered, just like the average owner loves it. Brushing the fur, cutting the nails, and a quick shampoo is just what the doctor ordered. The peace of mind that comes over a person when you get a professional service, is quite high, which is why this option is an imperative thing to look into.

What Cat Groomers Do

Things The Best Cat Groomers Do

There are a lot of different pet owners that are dealing with cats. The feline creatures are interesting in a lot of ways, and each breed presents a special kind of nuance that cat groomers have to know before moving forward. The best cat groomers do several things that most others can’t really do at home. While there are some gifted cat lovers, there are some that you just can’t do without some expert knowledge.

Consider the following several things that cat groomers do that can separate a professional from your average consumer.

  1. Fur – The beginning of the process most cat groomers start with is brushing the hair. If a pet requires a bath, then they’ll be bathed, dried, and then their hair will get further brushing. An expert won’t force the process, and will know how to calm the nerves of even the most frantic of cats. The preliminary moments might seem somewhat difficult, but moving forward it will get easier and a cat will trust.
  2. Claws – The best cat groomers will not completely cut the claws but rather trim them to a certain level. Getting the nails to be less sharp is usually done here.
  3. Eye Cleansing – Cleaning around the eyes can be rough, but a professional can get in the sensitive area and make sure that there is no major pain. Being gentle is the most important part here, and a pro will know how to move forward with this option, and not intrude on the delicate eye socket.
  4. Ear Cleansing – The ear cleansing part can be somewhat difficult for some. Getting too close to the ears of a cat can cause them much stress and fear. This fear can be taken away with gentle swabs and hands that are experienced and steady.

The above four things are the most important part of the process of taking care of a cat  young and old. There are a lot of pets that have sensitivities when it comes to cleaning, and if you have a cat that just can’t be controlled at home, consider a professional grooming service. A service will have a professional that cares will take the proper time to move forward and help you with your pet without worry of injury or worse.

Finding the proper company to help is difficult at times. Even with the information age of the Internet allowing people to have quick access to information, it can be somewhat daunting to trust a stranger with your beloved friend. If you’re worried about the process, make sure to ask questions that will explain the process further. If they can give you proper customer service up front, an estimate, and more, you’ll find that peace of mind will come over you and you’ll have your kitty loving you even more. Most people try to keep their pet groomed at home, but for those that want a bigger sense of focus on their cats, only a professional cat groomer can offer the services necessary to make your kitty’s world seem so much better.

Don’t Pay For a Cat Groomers Horror Story

Pet owners consider their animals as part of the family. Caring and making sure their pets are fed, cleaned and warm is a priority for most who own dogs and cats. Therefore, it is naturally assumed that a paid grooming service would care for their pet, and provide a positive experience. This is not always the case as we have heard horror stories from many of our customers. We always aim to take positive information from each pet grooming “horror story” we hear, by using the negative as a way to make positive enhancements to our services. Even so, some stories are so alarming, making even the worst of pet groomers take a second look at themselves.

Pet Grooming Disaster
There was a story recently when a person took her cat in for a general cleaning and a shaving. Her cat was in good condition when she took her in, so there were no worries or any reason for concern prior to taking her in.

The cat was to be cleaned and shaven, however when she picked up her cat, it was red with bumps all over its body. Some of the places on the cat had not been cared for, and her cat seemed to be quite irritable. The cat groomers who provided the service did not tell her that the cat had been stressed during the process, and gave no reason for why the job was half done. This customer was treated quite rude when she questioned the look of her cat.

Lion Cuts Explained

Lion cuts are done for many reasons, mostly to cool the cat or cut down on shedding and hairballs.

A lion cut is a short shave for your cat with definite lines. The body is shaved close leaving the ruff and head full and the legs are shaved to a certain point and the tail may be left full or with a pom-pom.

A groomer should know the lines of this cut in order to present you with a beautiful cat! Cats have paw pads  placed further up the leg, above the foot, as well as tendons that are prominent, below the shave line for the standard lion cut.

When any shaving is done in these areas, unnecessary risk is involved. You should never shave down a cats tail all the way, always leave enough hair at the end to create a pom-pom or leave a full tail. When a cats tail is shaved down all the way, a cat may chew or bite their tail, causing injury to themselves.

Why a Lion Cut for cats?

Sometimes a cat is so severely matted the only remedy is to shave off the damaged hair. Some cats are just happier when not wearing their full coats! Lion cuts are very popular with our clients. Lion cuts can be done on long or short hair cats.

How long does a lion cut last?

On average it can take 3 months for a short hair cat to regrow to full length. On a long hair cat it can take 4 to 6 months to regrow to a full coat. There is no reason, provided a cats skin is healthy and its temperament is suitable that a lion cut can not be done more frequent, if the owner wants this.

Important Considerations for first time lion Cuts

For first time lion cut on a cat, the owner should know that it is a drastic change, appearance wise, for both owner and cat. Most cats adjust to their lion cut within a couple of days, sometimes developing a much better disposition because of it.

Occasionally the cats coat may grow in sparsely after a shave down, guard hairs grow normal but the undercoat comes in much slower. This can happen at any time and may never happen again to the same cat once the scraggly coat is shaved back down and the regrowth process is started over. Reasons for this are not known. If this continues to happen on a particular cat, there could be underlying health problems and your cat should see a veterinarian.

Lion Cut variation is a comb cut

A comb cut is the same as a lion cut, just leaving the hair longer. Comb cuts can vary in length, 1/2 to 1 inch or longer, The thicker and more plush a cat’s coat, the better a comb cut will look. Cats with a silky coat type tend to look choppier and less suited to the style as a whole.

With comb cuts there will always be some level of tracking on the coat. Tracking, being lines left from the comb attachment. Even when tracking is present, it will typically disappear within a day or two of the grooming, after the coat settles. The comb cut, done proper, is actually two grooms, a full coat groom first then the comb cut is done, that is why a comb cut cost is quite a bit more than a lion cut.

Comb cuts must be done on a clean cat. The lines are the same, on both the lion cut and the comb cut. To achieve a good comb cut the cat must  be suitable, in both temperament and coat type.

Call us today or stop by Feline Fabulous so we can discuss if a lion cut is right for your cat.

Things to Consider when Boarding your Cat

It is always a difficult choice to make for cat owners when they are forced to leave behind their feline friends when going away.  There is the constant worry of whether to leave them at home and request neighbors to take care of their needs or put them in a cat boarding facility.

Cats should be provided water and food regularly along with some time in fresh air daily and unless you can trust your neighbors to do a good job of it, you can be in a real dilemma.  Not to worry, there is one lifesaving option that can work out just fine a Cat Boarding Facility!

Before deciding on boarding your cat, there are a few things that need to be kept in mind

  • Ensure that the location of the facility is convenient to your home as cats can be very temperamental when it comes to traveling long distances
  • Interviewing the Kennel for gathering information about how long they have been in business, references etc. can be very helpful.
  • Surprise visits to the kennel can go a long way in seeing for yourself the place and being satisfied about its cleanliness, place of boarding of the cats, and look out for smells and general treatment of the pets.
  • Checking out with your neighbors can help in choosing the best kennel for your cat
  • Collect details about kennel requirements like special vaccination rules, whether you can provide food and treats to your cat, leave behind its blanket or toys etc.
  • The cat’s schedule while at the kennel should be thoroughly checked out like the type of accomodations they are put in, and its spaciousness, is it a cage or something much more humane and roomy, whether they are let out at regular intervals, the competency level of the staff who handle them and so on.
  • All contact information should be provided including your mobile number for emergency situations.
  • Leaving your family veterinarian’s name and phone number at the kennel office can be very useful in case of any health related problems for the cat.
  • Your cat’s medical history as well as any behavioral quirks should also be registered with the kennel authorities for safety purposes.
  • Any special diets as well as medications should also be mentioned to make your cat’s stay comfortable at the kennel.

When it comes to pricing, quality makes all the difference, so be willing to pay a little extra for professional cat boarding facilities, with staff that genuinely love pets and are willing to take care of them in a loving and kind manner.

Ideally, the kennel should include small kennels, play area for stretching their legs, good and hygienic food and water, regular grooming, personnel attendance, and above everything else, a dog-free environment.

So, go ahead and browse online the various kennels websites, view the facilities offered, the price they charge along with any additional charges and extra facilities they offer, the location of the kennel and above everything else, look out for reviews from pet owners and make your decision accordingly.

Quality should never be compromised upon and it is worth every penny that you spend on professional kennels if your cat can be safe and secure and you can also be mentally at peace when you go away, so choose wisely!

Toe Tuffs & Ruff Skim?

Toe tuffs? Ruff skim? What are you talking about?

Toe TuffsSome of the most beautiful attributes of the long hair breeds can be problem points for the owner. Toe tuffs, the longer  hairs growing on the bottom of the feet between the paw pads, can track litter threw out the house. They are desirable when showing and are part of the breed standard for many pedigreed cats, but can be trimmed, quickly and safely using a small trimmer clipper, to suit the needs of the owner.

The ruff skim, when an owner request a trim around the neckline of the cat–often times this request is to prevent the ruff from getting wet or dirty when the cat eats or drinks or to keep the ruff hairs from being caught in its mouth when licking. A ruff trim creates an over all neater appearance, easier to maintain on cats with a longer ruff.
