Cat Grooming Styles

A Close Shave Grooming Styles

Cats have fur just like humans have hair, primarily cats fur helps them regulate their body temperature. Cats obviously have a lot more fur then humans have hair. As with our hair, cat fur, from time to time needs grooming. Regardless of the breed of the cat it’s fur from time to time will need to be groomed. Breeds such as Persians and other long haired breeds will potentially need more grooming then others.

Regular grooming will help the fur to grow and stimulate blood circulation.

Grooming a cat helps it to stay healthy and contented. It removes tangles and matted fur and helps in ensuring the cat looks at its best. Regular grooming can also help the owner spot any potential hygiene issues and it allows a check for signs of ill health. There are several cat grooming styles and they are chosen depending on the breed of cat and individual taste. While some owners attempt to groom their cat themselves it is advisable to have your cat groomed by a professional at a proper cat grooming center. Some cats will get nervous and anxious and may require more then one person to perform the grooming. Using a certified feline groomer is a sensible precaution and one that your cat will thank you for.

The striped style of grooming

Can also be known as clipping or shaving. This style is sometimes referred to as ‘ the Summer Shortie’. The cats fur is shaved close to the body and is ideal when a cats fur is extremely matted or tangled. It can also help the cat to remain cool in extremely hot temperatures helping it to remain comfortable. It is important to remember that cats can also suffer from sunburn.

The Lion cut

This requires the cats fur to be shaved close to the body but the fur on the head, tail and feet remain longer creating a grooming style similar to that of show poodles. This style of grooming creates a very specific look and will not tend to suit all breeds of cat.

A hygiene cut

Will not alter the look of a cat as dramatically as some grooming styles but it is still an important type of grooming. Long head cats often get bits of  feces stuck to the hair around the anus and by grooming this hair the cats hygiene is considerably improved. This cut although grooming of sorts is more of a practical measure then a style issue.

The peekaboo grooming style,

The fur on the cat’s belly is clipped, and the length is merged into the fur on the cat’s back. This achieves a full coated look. This grooming style helps to ensure that it is more difficult for the cats to get their fur matted and tangled. It can also help reduce the incidents of fur balls.

The partial cut requires the fur on the back, tail and sides to be left longer whilst the inside of the thigh, anus tail and chin are clipped.

How to Select a Cat Grooming Expert

Cat Grooming Expert selection process

Families always want the best for their feline pals, and it’s important to always look into their best interests. If you’re one of the millions of cat owners, it’s important to look into getting your pet groomed by an expert. A good cat grooming professional will be able to not only help with the coat, nails, and overall well being, but also look into the health of your cat as well. A healthy cat will also most likely be a well groomed cat.

Consider following the hints below, when it’s time to select a cat grooming expert for your beloved feline friend.

  1. Ask Around – Make sure that you ask around and see if any of your friends and family is moving forward with grooming. Most often, professionals get a lot of their business through word of mouth, so it’s a good thing to consider overall. Neglecting to ask around can mean the difference between getting a good overall professional service or something less than wholesome for your pet.
  2. Reputation – We are living in a digital world, one that has a lot of information at the push of a button. People can even find a lot of different things on their phone, without getting on the full-fledged Internet. Reading the reputation of a company online is easier than ever. You will find that there are many different services in your area that offer the right services for you, at a price that you can afford.
  3. Quote – Get a quote before you invest in any type of service. This is a tried and true option that many people seem to forget about. Always make sure that you get a full quote, and if possible get it in writing. If you don’t get the information in writing, you might end up missing out on the greatness that is involved with getting a cat grooming expert to attend to your feline friend.
  4. Package Deals – Lastly, consider looking for package deals that will give you a discount. These can be a one-time discount or a discount on several services sprawled out throughout any given time frame. Getting ahead of the curve is important, and that’s why a package deal should be move forward with medical assistance as well.

Your pet deserves the best, and if you don’t have enough patience or time to do the whole grooming thing yourself, then look for a cat grooming expert for your overall needs. Your cat might not take to it at the very first moment, but they’ll learn to love the greatness of being pampered, just like the average owner loves it. Brushing the fur, cutting the nails, and a quick shampoo is just what the doctor ordered. The peace of mind that comes over a person when you get a professional service, is quite high, which is why this option is an imperative thing to look into.

Don’t Pay For a Cat Groomers Horror Story

Pet owners consider their animals as part of the family. Caring and making sure their pets are fed, cleaned and warm is a priority for most who own dogs and cats. Therefore, it is naturally assumed that a paid grooming service would care for their pet, and provide a positive experience. This is not always the case as we have heard horror stories from many of our customers. We always aim to take positive information from each pet grooming “horror story” we hear, by using the negative as a way to make positive enhancements to our services. Even so, some stories are so alarming, making even the worst of pet groomers take a second look at themselves.

Pet Grooming Disaster
There was a story recently when a person took her cat in for a general cleaning and a shaving. Her cat was in good condition when she took her in, so there were no worries or any reason for concern prior to taking her in.

The cat was to be cleaned and shaven, however when she picked up her cat, it was red with bumps all over its body. Some of the places on the cat had not been cared for, and her cat seemed to be quite irritable. The cat groomers who provided the service did not tell her that the cat had been stressed during the process, and gave no reason for why the job was half done. This customer was treated quite rude when she questioned the look of her cat.

Hearing stories like this, can only make us better. We make sure that all equipment used is clean and sterilized. Lion Cuts Explained

Lion cuts are done for many reasons, mostly to cool the cat or cut down on shedding and hairballs.

A lion cut is a short shave for your cat with definite lines. The body is shaved close leaving the ruff and head full and the legs are shaved to a certain point and the tail may be left full or with a pom-pom.

A groomer should know the lines of this cut in order to present you with a beautiful cat! Cats have paw pads  placed further up the leg, above the foot, as well as tendons that are prominent, below the shave line for the standard lion cut.

When any shaving is done in these areas, unnecessary risk is involved. You should never shave down a cats tail all the way, always leave enough hair at the end to create a pom-pom or leave a full tail. When a cats tail is shaved down all the way, a cat may chew or bite their tail, causing injury to themselves.

Why a Lion Cut for cats?

Sometimes a cat is so severely matted the only remedy is to shave off the damaged hair. Some cats are just happier when not wearing their full coats! Lion cuts are very popular with our clients. Lion cuts can be done on long or short hair cats.

How long does a lion cut last?

On average it can take 3 months for a short hair cat to regrow to full length. On a long hair cat it can take 4 to 6 months to regrow to a full coat. There is no reason, provided a cats skin is healthy and its temperament is suitable that a lion cut can not be done more frequent, if the owner wants this.

Important Considerations for first time lion Cuts

For first time lion cut on a cat, the owner should know that it is a drastic change, appearance wise, for both owner and cat. Most cats adjust to their lion cut within a couple of days, sometimes developing a much better disposition because of it.

Occasionally the cats coat may grow in sparsely after a shave down, guard hairs grow normal but the undercoat comes in much slower. This can happen at any time and may never happen again to the same cat once the scraggly coat is shaved back down and the regrowth process is started over. Reasons for this are not known. If this continues to happen on a particular cat, there could be underlying health problems and your cat should see a veterinarian.

Lion Cut variation is a comb cut

A comb cut is the same as a lion cut, just leaving the hair longer. Comb cuts can vary in length, 1/2 to 1 inch or longer, The thicker and more plush a cat’s coat, the better a comb cut will look. Cats with a silky coat type tend to look choppier and less suited to the style as a whole.

With comb cuts there will always be some level of tracking on the coat. Tracking, being lines left from the comb attachment. Even when tracking is present, it will typically disappear within a day or two of the grooming, after the coat settles. The comb cut, done proper, is actually two grooms, a full coat groom first then the comb cut is done, that is why a comb cut cost is quite a bit more than a lion cut.

Comb cuts must be done on a clean cat. The lines are the same, on both the lion cut and the comb cut. To achieve a good comb cut the cat must  be suitable, in both temperament and coat type.

Call us today or stop by Feline Fabulous so we can discuss if a lion cut is right for your cat.
