Sanitary & Belly Shave

The Sanitary Shave helps with messy situations

Does your long hair kitty get a bit messy on the bottom and you hate to clean them up after every litter box affair? Maybe your kitty is a bit obese and can not effectively clean themselves properly, or your elderly kitty has a few issues with keeping clean.

What does a Sanitary Shave do?

A sanitary shave is keeping the hair short in these areas and may alleviate the problems. A mini sani shave is hair shaved just around the anus. A full sani shave involves the entire groin area. All sani shaves can be done to suit your kittys personal needs and help keep things cleaner for you and your kitty.

Cat Grooming Myths

Cat Grooming Myths & Misconceptions

Cats groom themselves?–Cats DO NOT groom themselves, they lick themselves!

cat groomingThe licking causes cats to ingests loose, shedding hair which in turn can cause hairballs, an unsightly mess to clean up and can be a potential health risk. The cats licking of it’s coat creates dander on the coat, you pet your cat and dander is transferred onto your hand, then elsewhere. Dander is the cause of allergic reactions in humans. Cat grooming maintains more than just appearances.

The licking your cat does, does nothing to prevent matting, cleaning off dander or to get rid of unsightly dandruff. Licking does not clean waxy ears or gooey eyes, kill fleas or trim nails. Licking certainly does not wash away grease from the skin and coat. Only a thorough cat grooming can accomplish this.

Cats are greasy creatures and greasy cats become matted cats. As for water, most cats do not like a bath but will tolerate it enough to allow it to be done thoroughly, making a difference in the overall health and condition of your cats skin and coat. Cat grooming is recommended on a regular basis.

Signs your cat can benefit from a good cat grooming:

[red_arrow_list width=”100%”]

  • 1. Long sharp claws tear at furniture, skin or get hung up in rugs
  • 2. Litter sticks to cats paws and gets everywhere
  • 3. Smells bad and has matts or dreadlocks
  • 4. Has waxy ears and matts around the ear area
  • 5. Smells like urine or gets fecal matter stuck to its hair
  • 6. Fleas
  • 7. A hairy cat that gets hot and lays on air conditioning vents
  • 8. Hairballs on floor
  • 9. Cat hair all over furniture and clothes
  • 10. Unsightly dandruff

[/red_arrow_list]Dander: dead skin cells and dried saliva flakes approximately 1/10 the size of dust mite. Dander contains an allergy-causing protein that is found primarily in cats saliva and on cat skin. It is accumulated over time as a cat licks itself. Dandruff: large flakes of dead skin that fall off usually due to lack of regular bathing or skin issues. Dandruff is visible to the naked eye and is easily treated if proper cat grooming is done on a regular basis.

How Cat Grooming is Done for Long & Short Haired Cats

[sharebox4 sharetext=”Share This Page”] [/sharebox4]

Our Full Coat Grooms are the same for a long hair or short hair cat grooming.

Nail trims are done first, then removal of LARGE, dirty mats. The bath is then given, which is the most vital part of the entire cat grooming process. Cats have excessively greasy skin and coats, the bath is needed to produce a clean, luxurious finish. Without a proper bath the groom or cat grooming is less than satisfactory.

A cat grooming bath done properly:

The coat will fall into place with a smoothness and volume after grooming is complete and will stay mat free for several weeks. Most cats require two complete lathers and rinse outs before they are considered clean. After the bath, the face and ears must be cleaned. The areas that require the most attention are the eyes, mouth and chin. The bathing process softens any hard eye discharge, making the cleaning of this area much easier after the bath.

During cat grooming process the groomer can spot potential problem areas and address the owner about them.

The ears are then cleaned and cats are known for having dirty, waxy ears. A safe and proper product is used to gently wipe the inside of the ear. If wax is still present in the folds of the ear, a Q-tip is used to reach those areas. Nothing is ever inserted deep inside the cats ear canal. Again we can spot potential ear problems, bring it to the owners attention and recommend veterinarian care if needed.

The second most important process of the cat grooming is in the blow drying and mat removal.

A high velocity dryer is used to produce the fluffy, show worthy results that cats are deserving of. It also helps in the de-matting process and removal of dead, loose hair. De-matting is done during the hand drying process after the coat is 90% dry. Dematting a wet coat will leave bald patches where the mats were removed.

At Feline Fabulous we have the Catty Shack, which makes the drying process much faster and safer than traditional table drying. Once the coat is dry and free of mats the cat is put back on the grooming table and a thorough comb out is done paying special attention to the underside and legs. Some loose hair will come out on the final cat grooming comb out. The more hair removed, the less hair will shed off once the cat is home.
